Going with the Grain

A recent study cited by the Harvard School of Public Health  looked included a quarter million people  indicates that including whole grains in your diet can help fight off five diseases: heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, colorectal cancer, and inflammatory disease. Besides being an extremely strong example of the importance of diet on our health.  This is a great example of foods working with us not against us! Whole grains consist of the bran, the germ and the endosperm. They are excellent sources of phytochemicals and antioxidants along with B vitamins, Vitamin E, magnesium, iron, and fiber. Most of the antioxidants and vitamins are found in the germ and the bran of a grain, yet processed grains and flours are comprised of the endosperm. So just how important are whole grains? Researchers found that people who ate two and a half servings per day of whole grains were 20 to 30% less likely to develop heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, colorectal cancer, and inflammatory diseases. Experts believe this heightened value is offered by the combination of fiber, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients found in whole grains. So, serve up some oatmeal or whole grain cereal for breakfast, whole wheat bread at lunch, and brown rice at dinner. It's a really simple approach to healthy living.
