Iron Women

September 12, 2013

We all know about the the importance of iron for women, so how do we get the most of the mineral out of our diet, instead of supplements?  Fire up that stove! Contrary to what you may have heard, cooking your veggies can be the key because for your body to be able to benefit from iron, it has to be able to absorb it. Vegetables store iron as a compound known as ferretin, which is released during the cooking process. A prime example is broccoli. Your body absorbs 30 percent of the iron in broccoli when it's cooked -- compared to only 6 percent when it's raw! Be sure to eat the vegetables right after they're cooked, they lose iron during the refrigeration process.
